If you’re new to selling on Amazon, you’ve likely heard about sales rank. But perhaps, never heard of Keepa?
I like the analogy Warren Buffet uses: “You only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out. “
Sales rank can appear great, and you might think a product is sale worthy and rush out to purchase a bunch of inventory. But hold on, Keepa your pants on!
Keepa is a little tool that allows you to peek behind the curtain and see beyond sales rank alone.
It shows you the history of an item. Such as, what it’s sold for in the past week, month, 6 months and so forth, along with the sales rank history.
You see, sales rank is merely a snapshot of the present. But it doesn’t tell the whole picture.
Take for example, a Christmas item. It may show up as a horrible rank in July. However, looking at the price/rank history with Keepa you could determine that it is a #1 best seller starting around November every year. If you went on Sales Rank alone, you might have overlooked this potential money maker.
Selling on Amazon requires strategy. Part of that strategy sometimes involves buying items out of season on massive clearance sale, and selling them later in the year when they’re in demand.
In fact, many of the most successful Amazon sellers make the majority of their profit doing just this! Some of my own best selling, most profitable items included.
Another useful and vital feature of Keepa, is that it shows you if Amazon have ever been a seller of an item by highlighting the chart in orange.
See that orange? That means Amazon are selling it. Blue means other sellers .
This is a life saver. I can’t tell you how many times I hear new sellers rushing out and buying an item that looked profitable with a great rank, only to have Amazon “jump” on their listing and tank the price!
The reality was, Amazon always sold this item at a lower price and had temporarily run out of stock. Other sellers momentarily capitalize on the lack of stock from Amazon and jack up their prices to make a few quick and profitable sales before Amazon come back in stock.
Some sellers make a very good living timing Amazon ASIN’s that regularly go out of stock. But most new sellers who try this get burned and lose money.
So Keepa is your friend. Use it every-time you source. It even has a plug in for your browser that shows the Keepa chart and data right on an Amazon listing when you pull it up.
This article only scratches the surface of the power of Keepa though. There’s so much more you can do with it. If you’d like to learn how to master Keepa, along with multiple strategies to success in selling on Amazon I’d love you teach you via my Seller Academy Masterclass
